The backpacks are packed. School is back in session. Calendars are filling up again, and there’s just a hint that summer is beginning to give way to fall.
For many families, September also brings another thought:
We really need to update our family portrait.
If you’ve been considering fall family portraits in Charlotte, NC, now is the time to start planning.
Fall has always been one of the most popular seasons for family photography. The temperatures become more comfortable, the landscape begins to change, and the softer autumn light creates a beautiful setting for portraits. It also arrives just before the holidays, when family, traditions, and togetherness naturally become even more meaningful.
At Stephen Dey Signature Portraits, I believe a family portrait should do more than document what everyone looks like today.
It should preserve what your family feels like at this moment in your lives.
After the freedom and activity of summer, fall brings families back into familiar rhythms.
School starts. Sports return. Weekends become busier. Holiday plans begin appearing on the calendar.
In the middle of all that activity, it can be easy to overlook just how quickly your family is changing.
Children grow. Seniors prepare for graduation. College students spend more time away from home. Parents and grandparents get older. Before we realize it, another year has passed.
That’s one reason I believe so strongly in family portraiture.
Growing up as one of seven children taught me early in life how important family connection is. The years move quickly, but the memories and relationships we build together become part of our story.
Togetherness matters.
A family portrait gives us the opportunity to stop time, even if only for a moment, and preserve the people who matter most.
There’s a reason fall is such a sought-after season for family photography in Charlotte.
As we move beyond the heat and humidity of summer, cooler temperatures make outdoor sessions more comfortable. The changing landscape introduces warmer tones and richer textures, while earlier sunsets give us beautiful opportunities to work with soft, flattering natural light.
Charlotte and the surrounding communities also offer tremendous variety.
Your family portraits might have the refined feel of Myers Park, the natural beauty surrounding Lake Norman, a relaxed setting in South Charlotte or Ballantyne, or another location that has special meaning to your family.
The location is important, but it should never overpower the people in the portrait.
My goal is to use the environment, lighting, composition, and relationships within your family to create something that feels natural, polished, and unmistakably yours.
This is probably one of the most common questions families ask, and fall gives us plenty of beautiful options.
Rather than putting everyone in identical outfits, I generally recommend coordinating your family around complementary colors and textures. Rich neutrals, creams, warm earth tones, subtle layers, jackets, sweaters, and timeless fabrics can photograph beautifully during autumn.
But clothing should still reflect your family.
The goal isn't to look overly styled or uncomfortable. It's to create visual harmony while allowing everyone's personality to come through.
And you don't have to figure it out alone.
Wardrobe is something we can discuss as part of the planning process so that what you wear works beautifully with your location and the finished artwork we are creating.
Fall is a wonderful time to think beyond an updated portrait of your immediate household and consider the generations that make your family story complete.
When was the last time your children were professionally photographed with their grandparents? When was the last time siblings, adult children, grandchildren, and grandparents were all together in one meaningful portrait?
Generational family portraits have a significance that only grows with time. They preserve not only faces, but relationships — the way a grandmother holds her granddaughter's hand, the connection between a grandfather and grandson, siblings together as adults, or three and four generations gathered in one place.
At Stephen Dey Signature Portraits, I can create a variety of groupings during a multigenerational session. In addition to the complete family portrait, we can photograph grandparents with their grandchildren, individual family units, siblings, couples, and other relationships that are important to your family. This allows us to tell a more complete story while everyone is together.
Fall and the approaching holiday season can be especially meaningful for these sessions. If adult children are returning home, grandparents are visiting Charlotte, or your extended family will be gathering for Thanksgiving, it may be a rare opportunity to have everyone in the same place at the same time.
And that's an opportunity worth preserving.
For more than 38 years, I've believed that a professionally created family portrait should become part of the family's history. That's why the experience doesn't end when the photography session is over.
Your portraits can become Masterpiece Portraits and custom wall art designed specifically for your home, as well as heirloom albums and handcrafted memory boxes that preserve multiple generations and relationships within your family. Wall portraits can be finished in canvas, acrylic, metal, or a beautifully framed presentation, with professional installation available to complete the experience.
Imagine your children years from now looking through an album and seeing themselves with their grandparents. Or imagine a grandchild eventually inheriting the portrait that has hung in your home for decades and being able to point to each person and understand where they came from.
That's when a family portrait becomes something more.
It becomes part of your family's legacy.
Your family deserves more than digital files. You deserve something lasting — something that can be passed from one generation to the next.
As a Master Photographer, Master Craftsman, and Certified Professional Photographer, I've had the privilege of photographing Charlotte families through countless seasons and milestones.
I've watched children grow up. I've photographed high school seniors who later returned with families of their own. And I've seen firsthand how portraits that seem important today become priceless with the passage of time.
If you've been saying, “We need a new family portrait,” don't let another year quietly pass.
Whether you're in Charlotte, South Charlotte, Ballantyne, Myers Park, Dilworth, Lake Norman, or the surrounding Charlotte area, now is the time to begin planning your fall portrait experience.
Let's celebrate your family as they are today and create something that will still matter decades from now.
Because fall will pass. Your children will grow. But the portrait we create together can preserve this chapter forever.
