There is something beautiful — and a little bittersweet — about watching your children grow.
When they are young, it can feel as though there will always be another bedtime story, another first day of school, another Saturday morning around the house, another family vacation.
Then suddenly, the little hands become bigger. The missing teeth disappear. Elementary school gives way to middle school, then high school. Before you know it, you're discussing driver's licenses, college applications, careers, and futures that may eventually take them beyond the walls of your home.
As a father and a photographer, I understand just how quickly those years move.
For more than 38 years, I have photographed families throughout Charlotte, South Charlotte, Ballantyne, Myers Park, Dilworth, Lake Norman, and surrounding communities, and one of the greatest privileges of my career has been watching children grow up in front of my camera.
That's also why I believe so deeply in the importance of the family portrait.
A beautifully created family portrait preserves what your family looks like today. But when that portrait is displayed prominently in your home, it becomes something more.
It becomes a daily reminder of connection, shared history, love, and the family your children are growing up within.
And someday, it may become part of the story they share with children of their own.
Parents often tell themselves they'll schedule family portraits next year.
Next year, when life slows down. When everyone has the right clothes. When the children are a little older.
But children don't wait.
Their faces change. Their personalities develop. Their interests grow, and their relationships with one another evolve. Before we realize it, our families have moved from one chapter into the next.
There will never be another moment when your family is exactly as it is today.
The moment you're living right now is the one worth preserving.
The child with the gap-toothed smile won't always have it. Your son won't always be shorter than you. Your daughter won't always be living down the hall. Those siblings who argue over the bathroom today may someday live hundreds of miles apart.
That's one of the remarkable things about professional family portraiture. The portrait we create today becomes more meaningful with every passing year.
Today, you see your family as they are now.
Ten years from now, you'll notice how much everyone has changed.
Thirty years from now, your children may look at that same portrait and see their childhood.
And generations from now, grandchildren or great-grandchildren you haven't even met may look at it and discover an important part of their own family story.
Family portraits preserve details we don't always realize we're going to miss — the way your daughter leaned against you, your son's expression when he laughed, the connection between siblings, the grandparents who could still gather with everyone, or simply the season when your entire family was still living under one roof.
You can't recreate those moments later. You can only preserve them while they're here.
That's why I believe so strongly in creating family portraits now rather than waiting for the elusive "perfect" time.
A family portrait gives us the opportunity to hold onto this chapter before it quietly becomes a memory — and as the years pass, its meaning only grows.
Growing up as one of seven children taught me the importance of family early in life. Over the years, our family trips to the Outer Banks became cherished traditions that strengthened our connection and reinforced something I continue to believe deeply today:
Togetherness matters.
Those experiences shaped not only my personal life, but also the philosophy behind Stephen Dey Signature Portraits.
When I photograph a family, my goal isn't simply to get everyone dressed nicely, arrange them together, and ask them to smile at the camera. I want to understand the relationships and personalities that make that family unique.
Who naturally gravitates toward whom? What makes the children laugh? What relationships define this chapter of your family's life? What do you want to remember when you look at this portrait 10, 20, or 30 years from now?
Those are the things that matter to me.
Every portrait experience begins with a personalized design consultation where I get to know your family, your children, your style, and what you hope to preserve. That understanding guides everything from location and composition to lighting and the way I bring your family together in front of the camera.
As a Master Photographer, Master Craftsman, and Certified Professional Photographer, I've spent decades refining the technical side of portraiture. But lighting, posing, and composition are ultimately tools.
The real purpose is connection.
After more than 38 years of photographing families, I've learned that the most meaningful portraits aren't simply the ones where everyone looks their best.
They're the ones that remind you what it felt like to be together.
We often think about family photographs from the parents' perspective.
We want to remember our children when they were young. We want to document milestones. We want a beautiful portrait for the living room or above the fireplace.
But I also think it's important to consider that portrait from your child's perspective.
Every day, they see an image of themselves surrounded by the people who love them.
Research and thinking within developmental and family psychology have long emphasized the importance of belonging, secure relationships, family stories, and a developing sense of identity during childhood.
A family portrait certainly doesn't create those relationships by itself. The love, security, traditions, faith, conversations, experiences, and time families share are what create those bonds.
But portraits can become powerful visual reminders of them.
Without saying a word, the portrait on the wall communicates something simple:
This is us.
This is our family.
This is part of my story.
There's something incredibly meaningful about allowing children to grow up surrounded by visual reminders of the family relationships that helped shape them.
If it has been several years since your last professional family portrait — or if you've never created one — take a moment to look at your family today.
Really look at them.
The children standing in front of you won't always be this age. Their personalities will continue to grow, their interests will change, and eventually their lives may take them beyond the walls of your home.
That's the beautiful and bittersweet nature of family.
We can't stop time, but we can preserve something meaningful from it.
At Stephen Dey Signature Portraits, I create luxury family portraits in Charlotte, NC that celebrate more than how your family looks. I want to preserve the relationships, personalities, connection, and love that define your family during this particular chapter.
When those portraits are displayed prominently in your home, they become part of your family's everyday life. Your children grow up seeing themselves surrounded by the people who love them. As the years pass, those same portraits become reminders of childhood, family traditions, and the home where so many memories began.
Eventually, their meaning can extend to another generation.
The family portrait hanging in your home today may someday hang in your child's home. An heirloom album you enjoy together now may eventually be opened by grandchildren who want to know what their parents looked like when they were young.
That's what makes portraiture so powerful.
What we preserve today can become part of your family's story for generations to come.
If you've been thinking about updating your family portrait, don't wait for the perfect year or the perfect moment.
Your family, exactly as they are today, is worth remembering.
